Vocabulary Warm-Up for IELTS Students

Enrolling in an IELTS review center in Cebu is a surefire way to develop your English communication skills. You will discover tips to ace the exam, and meet new friends whom you can review with. However, going to class and answering practice tests can become monotonous. When this happens, some students are at risk of losing their drive to learn. This is when creativity becomes essential.

As a student, you should not depend on lectures alone. You must dedicate your time to find different ways to level up your IELTS journey. Vocabulary warm-up, for one, is a fun and easy activity that you can do alone or with your classmates in IELTS review center. The more vocabulary that you know, the better that you can express your ideas. Here are some vocabulary warm-up activities to help you.

1.    Use new words in a sentence
Learn at least three new English words per day. Search for their meaning, and try using them in a sentence. To level up the challenge, you must find a way to use these three words in a conversation. This is a good exercise to check whether or not you can use the words in the correct context.

2.    Create a story based on a picture
You can do this alone or with your friends. Pick an image from any resource, and try to make a story out of it. Use English when telling your story. This is a good grammar and speaking exercise.

3.    Charades
In this game, players will guess a word or phrase based on pantomimed clues. You can play this with your classmates in the IELTS review center in Cebu. This game is not only a good vocabulary warm-up; it is also an excellent way to boost interaction among your peers.

4.    20 questions
This is a classic game where one person thinks of a particular word. The other people have to guess the word, but they can only ask twenty questions. The trick is the other person can only answer yes or no. This activity boosts your critical thinking skills and assesses your communicative ability.

5.    Mixed-up sentence
This game can be played with a partner. Mix up the word order in a sentence, and challenge your partner to reconstruct the original sentence. This is a fun activity to assess your grammar skills.

6.    Make the most words
Think of a topical word, and write it vertically. Now, come up with the longest words that begin with each letter. This activity tests your range of vocabulary.

7.    What does your name mean?
This activity is also a test of your vocabulary. Write adjectives beginning with each letter of your name.
     Magnificent,    Idealistic,     Knowledgeable,        Energetic

8.    Name ten
Think of ten words that fit in particular criteria. For example, think of slang words that are unique in the UK.

9.    One-minute speech
This activity is best played with your peers in IELTS review center in Cebu. It tests your thinking speed, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills. Ask each member of your class to write down a random word on a piece of paper. Put the pieces of paper in a container, pick one word, and make a speech about it. Set a timer to make sure that you stay within the time limit.

10.    Word association
Think of a word, and take turns in identifying a term associated with the previous word.
